Success is an active process of choices and risks

Jill Fleming is an educational management consultant and student coach

A parent once asked me, “What is a students biggest challenge in college?”
I answered, “Freedom”!

Today’s college student is faced with many responsibilities and distractions.

“Doing college” successfully requires one to be able to balance the academic demands, social opportunities and temptations, plus their physical needs of sleeping and eating. If a student is dealing with ADHD, anxiety, learning issues, executive function issues, or a leaning toward depression, the day-to-day stresses are easily compounded.

I often see students who are bright and were relatively successful in high school. Traditionally, classes and after-school activities provide a rigid schedule with very little free time. The executive function components of time and task management, organization, and planning are greatly impacted and challenged by the ‘free time’ in a student’s college life. “Oh, I have lots of time to get that done! I only have 2 classes today!”

For parents, distance presents new challenges to the parent-child relationship. By encouraging independence and autonomy in a new framework, the future adult-adult relationship will emerge.  Yes, striking that balance is a precarious and exciting time for both parents and young adults!

My goal is to help them solve their own problems by providing a centrist sounding board. There are ways to work smarter vs harder. I assess their needs and put into place an active formula to cultivate patterns and techniques for the student’s steps to success. It is an active process that is continually reviewed and individualized for each student.

Accountability is an important component in a successful student-coach relationship. Truth and transparency regarding grades and choices help the student develop independence toward becoming a discerning and successful young adult making academic and life choices.  By striving to create momentum and motivation, self-sufficiency and problem solving are the end product!

College coaching is an exciting and rewarding endeavor!
